Montana Black Spray Paint 400ml

Montana BLACK is a high-pressure, nitro-combi based graffiti paint made in Germany. It's built for speed: the high-pressure valve, heavy pigment load and very short drying times let you cover large areas quickly and keep layering without waiting around.

BLACK is high pressure, so it puts out more paint, dries faster and has a flatter, more matte finish – ideal for fast graffiti work and big fills. GOLD is low pressure, giving a softer, slower spray with more control for detail work, artwork and DIY projects.

At around 20°C it's dust dry in 2–3 minutes, touch dry in about 10 minutes and fully cured after roughly 12 hours. You can layer standard BLACK colours wet-on-wet, though Montana suggest about 5 minutes between coats for the best finish. Let metallic, chrome or tar colours dry before spraying BLACK over them.

Make sure the surface is clean, dry and free of oil, dirt and rust. Shake the can for 2–3 minutes, spray from 15–20cm and build up 2–3 thin layers in a crisscross pattern, allowing around 5 minutes between layers. Always test on a hidden area first.

Take the cap off, turn the can upside down and give the base a firm tap with your palm so the plastic safety ring drops out. Shake hard for 2–3 minutes until you can hear the mixing balls moving freely, refit the cap and do a test spray away from your piece before you start.

Yes. Once dry it's weatherproof and lightfast (it contains UV blockers), and it's winterproof – one of the best-performing cans in the cold. Can pressure starts to drop at 0°C and below, so keep your cans warm for as long as possible. Sealing with Montana Varnish will extend the life of your work.

Yes, as long as the BLACK has dried first – spraying other paints onto wet BLACK can cause cracking or reactions. Once cured it works with acrylic markers, acrylic paint, gouache, ink and chalk, and it can be over-painted with synthetic or acrylic lacquers after 24 hours. Always test on a scrap area first.

The 400ml and 600ml cans come fitted with Montana's orange dot Fat Cap. Montana's standard caps (Level 1–6) all fit, so you can swap to a skinnier cap for outlines or a wider one for fills.

No. Montana BLACK and GOLD each use Montana's own colour system, developed with artists, so the colours won't correspond exactly to RAL or other colour charts even where they look similar.

Montana recommend an air temperature of 10–25°C, a surface temperature of 5–40°C and humidity no higher than 60%. Cold or damp conditions slow drying and can affect the finish, so let your cans reach room temperature before use where you can.

Stored properly – somewhere dry at 10–25°C with humidity under 60% – Montana cans have a shelf life of up to 10 years. Keep the cap on the can when it's in storage.

Shake well for at least 1–2 minutes after the mixing ball starts to rattle, and give the can another shake every so often while you paint. Some paints need longer, so check the product details for any specific guidance.

High pressure cans put out a lot of paint quickly, which makes them good for filling large areas and fast work. Low pressure cans give a slower, more controlled flow for detail, outlines and fine lines. Medium pressure cans sit in between. The cap you use also makes a big difference to the width and flow of the spray.

When you've finished painting, turn the can upside down and spray for a couple of seconds until only gas comes out. This clears paint out of the valve and cap. If a cap does block, swap it for a fresh one. Used caps can be soaked in a suitable cleaner: water for water-based paint, or cap cleaner or thinners for solvent-based paint.

Shake the can well, hold it at the recommended distance (usually around 15–30cm), keep it moving and build up colour in thin layers, letting each layer dry slightly before adding the next. Heavy single coats are the most common cause of drips and runs.

Aerosols don't perform well when they're cold – the pressure drops and the paint can spit, run or take much longer to dry. Keep cans at room temperature before use and let them warm up gradually indoors, never with direct heat. Check the product details for the recommended working temperature.

Not always. A primer helps on very absorbent surfaces (bare wood, plaster, raw concrete), very smooth or shiny surfaces (gloss plastic, glass, bare metal) and on anything you want to last outdoors. Make sure the surface is clean, dry and free of grease, and always test on a small area first.

Always work in a well-ventilated area and take regular breaks in fresh air. We recommend wearing a respirator mask with filters suitable for paint vapours, plus gloves – even with low-odour or water-based paints. Read the safety information on the can before use.

Keep cans in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and sources of heat. Aerosols must not be exposed to temperatures above 50°C, so never leave them in a hot car. Clearing the cap after each use (turn the can upside down and spray until only gas comes out) means it's ready to go next time.

Make sure the can is completely empty, with no paint or pressure left, then recycle it wherever your local council accepts aerosols – many UK councils do. Cans that still contain paint shouldn't go in household recycling; check with your council about disposing of them safely.

No. Aerosols can't be sent by Royal Mail, so any order containing spray paint is sent by courier instead.
